NEW DELHI – DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson on Thursday called for the government to introduce legislation that would allow for the suspension of judges who face serious allegations backed by strong evidence. Speaking during Zero Hour in Parliament, Wilson argued that the current constitutional mechanism for removing judges, impeachment, is a "long drawn and extremely complicated process."
He stressed that a new mechanism is necessary "to retain public faith in the judiciary" without compromising its independence. The demand for a new judicial accountability law was raised as impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma are reportedly pending before the Lok Sabha, highlighting the practical difficulties of the existing system. Wilson's proposal focuses on creating an interim measure to address misconduct allegations while formal proceedings are underway.
