The federal government of Pakistan has declared February 5, 2026, as a nationwide public holiday in observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day, reiterating the nations unwavering support for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and their right to self-determination.
A notification issued by the Cabinet Division stated that all public and private offices will remain closed on this day, with a one-minute silence to be observed at 10:00 AM to honor the brave Kashmiri martyrs who have lost their lives in the struggle for freedom.
Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed annually on February 5, focuses on demonstrating Pakistans unity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir, their ongoing freedom struggle, and paying tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for Kashmiri independence. The day will feature rallies, seminars, and special programs across the country highlighting the Kashmir cause.
In Punjab province, residents will enjoy an extended four-day weekend, as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced an additional provincial holiday on February 6 for the Basant festival, followed by the regular weekend on Saturday and Sunday. This marks the first time in 18 years that the traditional kite-flying festival will be officially celebrated in Lahore.
The observance comes at a time when tensions remain high in the disputed Kashmir region, with Pakistan continuing to advocate for a UN-supervised plebiscite to allow Kashmiris to determine their own future. International human rights organizations have repeatedly called for dialogue and peaceful resolution to the decades-old conflict.
